Inter Milan were left ruing Romelu Lukaku’s miss and a Dimarco header that bounced back off the bar that left them just short in the Champions League final.

The Nerazzurri boss Simone Inzghi spoke about his “regrets” after the game but congratulated his team saying “we didn’t deserve to lose”.

Ultimately his team were defeated by a superior side in Manchester City but the Italian manager, speaking in the post-match press conference, felt hard done by with the loss.

“In those final moments with Lukaku, Dimarco and Gosens we deserved more,” said Inzaghi. “In the first half we could have done a bit better with ball possession. The second half there were more stakes at play.

“We do have regrets as defeat is the worst thing in sport. I congratulated my lads. They played a great game tonight. We didn’t deserve to lose.

“It would have been fantastic to share this trophy defeating the strongest team in the world. We were on a par with Man City so we are very disappointed.

“This is football. These disappointments can allow you to mature. I wonder why in those final 25 minutes we hit crossbar and one hit the ball against team mate and we were one centimetre from scoring.”

His difficulty was coming up against a City side who have dominated English football in the last six seasons but had always fell that bit short in the Champions League.

“Man City deserved to win the Champions League. Tonight they played against a great Inter team who cornered them. City went close before and I congratulated Guardiola but I would have wanted them to wait a little longer (to win the European Cup).

“What makes me proud is what these lads did, in this campaign and in this final against City.

"We had to be a bit luckier. I hugged my players one by one after.”
