With a 2-0 win over Lyon, Barcelona retained their European title and secured their third Women’s Champions League title in four years.

Player of the match Aitana Bonmatí and Alexia Putellas got the second half goals to secure the trophy in the San Mamés Stadium in Bilbao on Saturday in front of 50,000 spectators.

Lyon had come into the game having defeated Barca in the 2019 and 2022 finals but the five in a row Primera División champions weren’t to be denied on this occasion.

The opener came from a Bonmatí deflected effort in the 63rd minute before the victory was wrapped up in the fifth minute of injury time by substitute Putellas.

What a season for Bonmatí who won the World Cup with Spain in a competition where she was top scorer and was named player of the tournament.

Speaking to UEFA.com, Barca defender Lucy Bronze said: "We knew we needed to be a club that made history. It's not easy, it's hard to win it once, but to do it back to back, Lyon showed how difficult it is.

"This team's finally done that. I think we go down in history as one of the best teams in Europe."
