Morecambe has confirmed the signing of defender Chris Stokes on a one-year contract.

The 31-year-old, who has accrued over 350 career appearances, returns to English football after a two-year tenure with Kilmarnock in Scotland.

During his stint at Kilmarnock, Stokes was instrumental in gaining promotion back to the Scottish Premiership and helping the team retain their status in the last season.

Prior to his time in Scotland, Stokes enjoyed spells at Forest Green Rovers, Coventry City, Bury, and Stevenage, making a substantial impact from Conference level to League One.

His record includes two promotions from League Two, achieved with Coventry City in 2017-2018 through the play-offs and with Bury as League Two runner’s up in 2018-19. Stokes also won the EFL Trophy with Coventry City in the 2016-17 season.

Morecambe manager Derek Adams highlighted Stokes' extensive experience as a key attribute, stating, “Chris is a player with really important experience that he can add to our group. He has been part of some very big moments for the clubs he has represented and that will be vital to the squad and the club going forward."

Upon his signing, Stokes said, “It’s great to be joining Morecambe ... I look forward to being part of a side that will make the Mazuma a difficult place to come to in 2023/24.”

He also expressed his anticipation for the upcoming season, “It’s back to business here in League Two now and I can’t wait to get underway and hopefully with our supporters behind us, we can have a positive season for this football club.”
