Manchester City has announced the acquisition of Netherlands international Jill Roord from VfL Wolfsburg on a three-year deal.

The seasoned midfielder joins Manchester City following her appearance in the UEFA Women’s Champions League Final against Barcelona and returns to England after two years in the Frauen Bundesliga.

Roord had previously played for Arsenal between 2019 and 2021, where she aided the Gunners in reaching the final of the Continental Tyres League Cup and achieving back-to-back top-three finishes.

The 26-year-old boasts a solid footballing pedigree, having secured 86 caps with the Netherlands since 2015. She was a crucial part of the team that triumphed in the UEFA Women’s European Championships in 2017 and reached the final of the FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2019.

During her time with Wolfsburg, Roord made 69 appearances in all competitions and netted 31 goals. She will join Manchester City after this summer’s World Cup and will don the number 20 shirt for the 2023/24 campaign.

Upon confirmation of her move, Roord expressed her excitement, “I’m very happy and it’s a very proud feeling for me to sign for Manchester City."

She went on to describe the club's style of play as a perfect fit for her and praised the Women’s Super League for its competitiveness.

Manchester City's Head Coach Gareth Taylor welcomed Roord, highlighting her proven track record both in England and Europe. He added, “She is a player whose calibre speaks for itself with what she has achieved, and we believe she will be a fantastic addition to our squad here at City. We’re looking forward to welcoming her aboard and working with her over the next three years.”
