Former Republic of Ireland striker Robbie Keane is set to embark on a new chapter of his career as he assumes the role of Head Coach at Maccabi Tel Aviv FC for the 2023/24 season.

The Israeli football club has signed a two-year deal with Keane and his team, who are scheduled to arrive in Tel Aviv in the next few days to gear up for the forthcoming season.

Keane is best known for his prolific career as a player. He has scored over 400 goals across multiple clubs including Tottenham Hotspur, Leeds United, Liverpool, Coventry City, West Ham, Aston Villa and LA Galaxy.

Most notably, he shone as the most capped player and top goal scorer for the Republic of Ireland.

Keane's coaching credentials include a recent stint as a coach at Leeds United during Sam Allardyce's short tenure, and previously as an assistant manager at Middlesbrough (2019-2020) and Republic of Ireland (2018-2020).

Expressing his excitement for the new role, Keane stated, “I am delighted to take on this challenge at Maccabi. My team and I look forward to beginning work and we have confidence in our ability to do what is necessary to prepare the team for the coming season.”

Welcoming Keane, Maccabi’s owner Mitch Goldhar lauded the incoming coach's potential contribution: “Robbie brings the mentality, character, energy and focus of a winner, traits he exhibited everywhere he played. These characteristics now combined with ambitions to succeed as a coach are aligned with our objectives at Maccabi.”
