Preston North End has confirmed the renewal of Greg Cunningham's contract, extending his stay at Deepdale until the end of December 2023.

The contract includes clauses for potential extension until June 2024, dependent on the defender's fitness and availability.

Despite currently rehabilitating from a hamstring injury, the 32-year-old player is keen to continue his journey with the club.

"I’m delighted. I’ve said it time and time again, I feel at home here. It’s where I’ve enjoyed my football the most, and I’m happy that the journey continues with this club," Cunningham expressed post-contract signing.

Cunningham, who has made 172 appearances since his arrival at Preston North End in 2015, is focused on his recovery and preparing for the upcoming pre-season.

“I feel strong. I’m getting fitter now...I feel like I’ll be ready to go. Everything’s gone very well over the summer rehab wise.”

The Irish defender had two stints with the club, first from 2015 to 2018, and later rejoining in January 2021.

His performances were praised by Manager Ryan Lowe, who said, “He had a good run of games in the team last season and did fantastically well. The injury was really disappointing because he was in good form and we want to get him back into that form. We want to get him back into the squad and performing the way we know he can.”

Cunningham's renewal is part of the summer's business activity at the club, following Robbie Brady's contract renewal and the loan addition of Liverpool defender Calvin Ramsay.

Cunningham sees these additions as positive and looks forward to more. "We’ve got Calvin in which is a great addition to the team and I’m sure there'll be a few more through the door as well," he said.

His determination to contribute positively and help the team reach its goals is apparent.

"It was unfinished business and I didn’t want to finish that way... I’m very grateful to the club for giving me the opportunity to stay on and I’ll give everything I can as normal,” Cunningham added.
