Former Republic of Ireland manager Mick McCarthy has parted company with Cypriot side APOEL after just nine games in charge.

The Yorkshireman was relieved of his duties on Wednesday morning following a fourth consecutive defeat that leaves the Nicosia club 11th in the 14-team Premier League.

Cyprus’ most successful club hired McCarthy at the beginning of November following a poor start to the season that had cost Marinos Ouzounidis his job.

Things got little better under McCarthy, who won just three of his nine games as manager, and Tuesday night’s defeat to mid-table Doxa proved the final straw.

An early strike from Tomas De Vincenti had given visitors APOEL an early lead but a goal in either half from Berat Sadik condemned them to yet another defeat.

Jack Byrne, who signed on a free transfer from Shamrock Rovers on Monday, was introduced for the final five minutes as APOEL chased an equaliser.

A short statement on the APOEL website read: “The company APOEL FOOTBALL (PUBLIC) LTD announces the end of its cooperation with coach Mick McCarthy.

“We wish Mr. McCarthy and his assistant Terry Connor good luck.”

APOEL have won the Cypriot Premier League in ten of the last 14 seasons but slipped to third place in 2020, with crosstown rivals Omonia clinching the title.
