Bolger signs for Cork City

Cork City have announced the signing of St. Patrick’s Athletic midfielder Greg Bolger.

The 27 year-old made over one hundred appearances in his time playing for St. Pats, winning the Premier Division, the FAI Cup, the EA Sports Cup, the Presidents Cup and the Leinster Senior Cup in his four years at the club.

On the move to the Leesiders Bolger said that he was delighted to be making the move to the Leesiders and that he hoped to be an integral part of a successful season in 2016.

“Cork City is one of the biggest clubs in the country, if not the biggest”, he said speaking to CorkCityFC.ie.

“John (Caulfield) has a plan for the year ahead, I think he has a few different ideas he wants to implement with the team and he wants me to be a part of that.

“I appreciate him bringing me down here and giving me a chance to play down here. I wouldn’t say it was a big choice, obviously Cork City speaks for itself.”

Cork ended 2015 in second position in the Premier Division for a second consecutive year, trailing champions Dundalk by a significant eleven points – a club Cork’s new signing knows all too well having played for the Lilywhites for a brief period in 2011.

“Dundalk have obviously set the bar, but I don’t think we will be far away. I think John is bringing in a few players, so I think we will be right there challenging and we could go one better. I want to try and get the club back up to the top where it belongs.”

Cork were again victim to defeat by the hands of Dundalk in last Sunday’s FAI Cup final when Richie Towell’s extra-time winner ensured City would end yet another season without silverware.

“I don’t know how many years it has been since this club has had success and the fans are obviously crying out for that; they have come so close and I am sure some of the players here are hurting from that. It’s an exciting challenge for me, I am really looking forward to it and I think we are going to have a good year.”

On the signing, manager John Caulfield said that his side were attaining one of the league’s best midfielders, praising the player’s competitiveness and drive to win games.

“I am absolutely delighted to have signed Greg. He is probably the top midfielder in the country and has won a league, a cup and a league cup with St. Pat’s over the last three seasons. He is in the prime of his career and has his best football ahead of him, even though he has won three /trophies in three years.

“He is known for passing ability, his competitiveness and will to win. He is energetic and he brings leadership to our team, which we need. I think it is a fantastic signing for us and a real marker of the type of player we are trying to bring in for next season to make sure that we can go a step further.”

Bolger’s signing comes on the same day manager John Caulfield announced that all of John O’Flynn, Liam Kearney, Kevin O’Brien and Billy Dennehy would not remain at the club for the 2016 season.
