Dennehy signs for Cork City

Former Everton and Cardiff City defender Darren Dennehy has agreed terms with Cork City for the 2013 Premier Division campaign.

Darren (24), is the younger brother of Shamrock Rovers winger Billy and has been capped at Under-21 level for the Republic of Ireland.

The Kerry native came through the youth system at Everton before being loaned out to Cardiff City. Failing to nail down much playing time with the Bluebirds, Dennehy had loan spells with Hereford and Gillingham before establishing himself with Barnet in 2010. Injury hampered his time at Barnet and Darren left The Bees in 2012 after his deal expired.

Tommy Dunne spoke of his delight after capturing Dennehy to CorkCityFC.net. “Darren is an experienced player and, being from Tralee, is relatively local also. Obviously we have had his brother Billy here previously, and I have heard a lot of good things about Darren. I have seen him play myself previously with the Irish Under 21’s, and he impressed me. He is a good addition to the squad and I believe his signing will strengthen the team, so I am delighted to have him on board.”

Dennehy also spoke of his joy after securing a deal with the Leesiders. “I’m delighted to have signed; I’m looking forward to getting into training and getting to know the lads. I’ve heard a lot about the club from Billy. He had a lot of good things to say about the club, he loved his time at Cork City and said that I would enjoy playing for the club too. There is a good team here, and I am looking forward to pre-season now.”
