The Bus Éireann National Women's league was launched on Thursday and Raheny United captain Rebecca Creagh says she is delighted by the progress women's football has made in Ireland.

“It's brilliant, it's been ongoing the last ten years but the likes of me have been playing for over ten years now and you always want to play at the top level in your country. It's nice to have finally got to this stage."

Raheny face a tough opening to their season as they take on Shamrock Rovers in the curtain raiser of the women's league and Creagh says she can't wait for the season to start.

“I'm a southsider myself so it will be nice to get the family out to watch it and hopefully it will be a good game – it should be interesting playing Rovers.”

Ireland's women's teams have performed incredibly well on the international stage. Most recently Peamount United made it to the last 32 of the women's Champions League.

Creagh said: “I’ve played with a lot of those girls within those squads and they’re class acts and it’s great that they have made women’s football in Ireland get to the highest stage in the world.

Although, Thursday's league launch was seen as a massive achievement for women's football, a lot of the players within the six participating squads felt it was a long way overdue, including the Raheny player.

She added: “Football in this country has always been predominantly male and this league is big time overdue. Women's football has always been there and I know since I was a kid that we always put it up to the lads when we were playing on the road, so it's definitely about
time that women's football got its look in.”
