Live Updates: Rep. of Ireland v N. Ireland

The Republic will look to affirm their lead at the top of the Carling Nations Cup table tonight as they take on Northern Ireland in the Aviva Stadium (Kick off 7.45 pm). We will bring you all the action and goals as they happen.

While much has been said about the friendly nature of the Carling Nations Cup, the competition for places within Giovanni Trappatoni's side for the upcoming Macedonia game on the 4th of June added to the first local "derby" between these two sides in over ten years should ensure that this game has that extra bite which will make that game that bit more appealing to the average supporter.

With James McCarthy being added to the long list of absentees after he picked up an ankle injury at the weekend, there's both an experimental and familiar feel to the team named by Giovanni Trappatoni yesterday. By far the most in the noticeable name in the XI is that of Simon Cox, the 24 year old striker currently playing for West Bromwich Albion. Cox will be making his debut after netting four goals from 19 games for West Brom this season, which he added to the ten goals he notched up in the 2009/2010 season after his £1.5 million pound transfer from Swindon.

Northern Ireland also have the same problems as the Republic and Nigel Worthington has been forced in to calling up no less than five players from the Irish League to his squad, something that would have League of Ireland fans wetting the bed with excitement if Giovanni was to do similar.
