Sligo Rovers manager Paul Cook was named the 2010 Airtricity / Soccer Writers Association of Ireland Personality of the Year at a ceremony in the Conrad Hotel in Dublin on Friday, 14th January.

Cook outlasted five other nominations including Michael O’Neill to receive the prestigious award. Cook steered the Bit O’ Red to a remarkable double winning season, as the Rovers from the West got their hands on the FAI Ford Cup as well as the EA Sports Cup. Many have commented on the entertaining nature of Sligo’s football during the last year, which helped their push to securing a much coveted European spot for 2011.

Airtricity League Champions Shamrock Rovers were also represented at the awards, when Alan Mannus received the Goalkeeper of the year award. The Northern Ireland international was instrumental in the Hoops road to League glory, and beat Ciaran Kelly and Peter Cherrie to the title.

A statement from the Airtrcity League Press Office read: "Paul Cook won a vote of the association's members from print and broadcast media in recognition of Sligo's achievements in 2010, as they entertained and enthralled all en-route to glory.”

"Sligo’s form throughout the year, and particularly in the latter half of the season was evident in October and November when Ciaran Kelly and Richie Ryan won the Airtricity/SWAI monthly awards."

Speaking at the presentation of the awards, Stephen Wheeler, Managing Director of Airtricity, commented:
"Tonight's awards not only honour those individuals who are nominated but also each and every person at club level, from administrator to fan, who contributes their time and their passion towards their club and their game. Their contribution is what makes up the personality of Irish football, of which we are immensely proud.”

"Throughout the past season, we have been proud at Airtricity to partner with the SWAI to honour the outstanding players of the season with the Player of the Month awards, and we are equally delighted to pay tribute to each of tonight's award nominees and our overall winners for their achievements this season."
