Guy remains optimistic of Euro spot

After a resurgent season in comparison with last year’ s annus horribilis St Pat’ s recent league form has mirrored some of the darker days of 2009, but Friday’ s 2-0 win over Bray gave Saints a much needed shot in the arm.

“It was a good win,” said Saints’ winger Ryan Guy afterwards. “I think it’s really important to finish our season on a high note and go into our last match with something to play for.”

The win came off the back of Tuesday night’ s Cup exit to Shamrock Rovers, and with prizes becoming more paltry with each passing day it would seem the task is now about lifting the dressing room after a tricky period for Pete Mahon’s men.

“It’ s always hard to do that, especially against a team like Bray, who’ve been on a good run and [have] a change of management. But I think our heads were on and we knew what was at stake here and I think we showed what we can do,” continued Guy.

The American has seen his usual berth on the right side of midfield shift to the top of the park in recent weeks but with fit and available bodies at a premium Guy lined out on the left flank against the Seagulls.

He wasn’t complaining. “It was fine. I had a free reign to go back and forth, right and left. I was playing that role and that was fine for me.”

St Pat’s now face into a daunting task at the Showgrounds next Friday. Only a win will do against Sligo and the Inchicore men will need Sporting Fingal to slip up at home to UCD if they are to collar the final Europa League spot.

The scalp against Sligo, at least, is something Guy believes is well within his sides’ range. “I think Sligo [are] on a good run. They’ve got a cup final, they’ve got their minds, hopefully, other places and I think we’ve got all the chance in the world. We got two goals here, so I think the goal difference is right up there (plus one to Sligo), so you know if we can beat them I think we’ve got a very good chance.”
