Tardelli focuses on the positive

Marco Tardelli was in no mood to dwell on the disappointing news that Ireland will be without target man Kevin Doyle for Tuesdays’ crucial away game against Slovakia.

Instead choosing to highlight the strengths of potential replacements for the stricken Wolverhampton Wanderers’ striker, Tardelli said: “It’s a problem because Kevin Doyle is a very good player for us. He is very important for us but also we have the young players like (Shane) Long, like (Andy) Keogh.”

Adding: “It is possible that Giovanni (Trappattoni) decide for Keogh or Long, I don’t know but we have very good players. Young and without experience maybe because Doyle plays in the Premier League but I think the young players are ready to play an important match.”

“Against Russia Long came on the pitch and play well. He scored a goal and I think it s between Long and Keogh because they play always (as a forward).”

Though the former Italian international would not be drawn on whether or not there will be any other changes of personnel ahead of the crunch encounter:

“We have another day to decide. We must understand that if the players are recovered, it is very important because we need the players to be very strong physically. Giovanni will decide on the morning of the match.”

And Giovanni Trappattoni’s assistant also confirmed that Liam Lawrence is also a potential doubt due to injury while Richard Dunne again sat out the Sunday morning session.
