Shelbourne’s caretaker manager Collie O’Neill’s spoke openly and honestly when asked to appraise his team’s performance following Shels’ 2-0 FAI Ford Cup victory over Dublin Bus.

However, O’Neill would not be drawn on whether or not he is actively pursuing the position of manager of the Dublin club on a permanent basis.

“(We) did well in the first-half, passed the ball well, played at our tempo but we dropped down a gear in the second-half. It turned into a little bit of a scrappy match then, we need to be playing at our tempo if we want to go and finish teams off.”

When asked how difficult it had been to motivate his team to match the endeavour of lower league opposition, Shels’ current boss responded: “It’s not really my job to go and motivate them, it’s the one thing I said to them in the team-talk, if this turned in to a passing game or a battle, fine, I can coach that all week long but cup games come down to desire.”

Adding: “That’s the one thing I can’t coach them, that’s the one thing they have to bring to the table themselves.”

Refusing to make public any interest that he may have in becoming Dermot Keely’s successor O’Neill diplomatically stated: “As it stands it could be anybody, it could be a lottery. There has been no decision made and there will not be any decision made until after the break.”

Concluding: “I was told I was here roughly the middle of July, I have six games and my job is to win six games.”
