Wigan Athletic have announced the loan signing of 19-year-old defender Luke Chambers from Liverpool FC for the remainder of the 2023/24 season.

Chambers, an England youth international, has made four appearances for Liverpool's first team this term and is the first signing of the January transfer window for Wigan Athletic manager Shaun Maloney.

Originally from Preston, Chambers joined Liverpool at the age of six. He signed his first professional contract in summer 2021 and played a  role in England's U19 European Championship win a year later.

In July 2022, Chambers was rewarded with a new contract at Liverpool and gained valuable experience against EFL opposition in the Bristol Street Motors Trophy.

Chambers spent time on loan at Kilmarnock last year, making 16 appearances across all competitions.

During the first half of the 2023/24 season, he remained part of Liverpool's first-team squad, frequently called upon by manager Jürgen Klopp.

He made his senior debut against Leicester City in October and subsequently appeared in three UEFA Europa League matches.

Reflecting on his move, Chambers expressed his enthusiasm. "I'm over the moon to sign here... I've come here to help the team win games and get as far as we can in the league," he said.

Shaun Maloney, Wigan's First Team Manager, commented on Chambers' versatility and potential.

"He's the perfect profile for that left-back position... he brings lots of technical quality, and he's good physically," Maloney stated.
