Birmingham City have axed gaffer Wayne Rooney just 15 games into his tenure at St Andrew’s following a disappointing run of form.

The Croxteth Crawdaddy was tempted back to England in October shortly after parting company with DC United following the conclusion of the MLS regular season.

But just two wins in 15 matches in charge saw the Blues slide from sixth place when he assumed the reins to 20th - just above the relegation zone.

Former Everton and Man United sharpshooter Rooney’s 53 goals in 120 England appearances was a record before being overtaken by Harry Kane last year.

The 38-year-old is the third-highest scorer in Premier League history with 208 goals for the Toffees and Red Devils.

Rooney, who had spells with Derby County and DC United before managing both, will be replaced by interim boss Steve Spooner.

Former Ireland international and assistant coach John O’Shea is set to stay on under Spooner alongside ex-England international Ashley Cole and former Northern Ireland ace Maik Taylor.

Birmingham CEO Garry Cook, formerly of Manchester City and the Saudi Pro League, said: “We are committed to doing what is necessary to bring success to St. Andrew’s.

“Unfortunately, Wayne’s time with us did not go as planned and we have decided to move in a different direction.

“The search for a successor begins with immediate effect and we will update supporters when we have further news."
