Premier Division Waterford have confirmed that they have swooped for Ben McCormack from St Patrick’s Athletic.

The promising attacking midfielder joins the Blues for an undisclosed fee after helping the Saints claim two FAI Cups in three years.

But Keith Long will be without striker Ronan Coughlan ahead of his men’s return to the Premier Division.

The former Sligo Rovers and St Pat’s forward has decided to try and earn a contract in the UK after his current deal at Waterford expired.

Coughlan scored 37 times in all competitions for Waterford last season - including the winner in their play-off final victory over Cork City to secure promotion.

“We’re disappointed to see Ronan leave but the club did everything we could to secure Ronan for next season,” boss Long said.

“He was outstanding last season, but he’s made it clear he wants to play in England again.

“Of course we’re sorry to see Ronan go, he was excellent last season for the club but we wish him well.”

However, the Blues will be hopeful that the arrival of McCormack can propel them to top-flight safety in 2024.

“I’m delighted to be here,” the former Belvedere schoolboy said.

“When Keith rang me and asked me to come, I was delighted because I knew it was a great opportunity to play games and show what I can do.

“I can’t wait to play at the RSC next season. I played a few times down in Waterford, it’s a tough place to go and always packed out, always full, so I can’t wait to get going down here now.”

McCormack joins Robbie McCourt and Darragh Leahy in joining Waterford for next season.
