First Division basement battlers Kerry have unveiled the signing of defender Andy Spain from Treaty United.

The Kildare man, 22, joins the Kingdom having also lined out for Athlone Town during the 2022 campaign.

He was also on the books of Shamrock Rovers as a youth but made no senior first-team appearances for the Hoops during his time there.

Spain made 19 appearances for Athlone Town during his spell in Co Westmeath before playing 20 times for Treaty last season.

“I really am buzzing to sign for Kerry,” Spain said. “After speaking to Conor (McCarthy), James (Sugrue) and Billy (Dennehy), I can tell they are very ambitious about the season ahead and I’m delighted to be part of it.

“I feel it’s somewhere I can progress my career and hopefully help bring the club success! I can’t wait to put on the jersey in Mounthawk Park and play in front of the Kerry fans.”

Spain is Kerry’s first new recruit of the off-season after they already re-signed Daniel Okwute, Cian Brosnan, Nathan Gleeson, Lee Axworthy, Rob Vasiu, Graham O'Reilly, Kevin Williams, Ethan Kos, Ryan Kelliher, Sean McGrath, Ronan Teahan and Samuel Aladesanusi.

“We’re thrilled to have signed Andy for 2024,” Kerry boss Conor McCarthy added.

“Andy is someone who knows the league, having played a couple of seasons in it already.

“It’s a great sign when players from other clubs are finding Kerry an attractive place to come and that’s down to years of hard work from everyone at the club.

“I’m sure I speak for everyone in saying we’re looking forward to seeing him in action.”
