Finn Harps manager Darren Murphy has announced that the club has signed academy graduate Oisin Cooney on a two-year deal.

The 16-year-old Clonmany native has come through the ranks at the Donegal club where he showed great promise under Academy Head Kevin McHugh and coaches Tim Hiemer and Eamonn Curry.

He made his senior debut for the club when he started in goals for Harps away to Bray Wanderers in October and helped the team to a 1-1 draw when David Rogers was manager.

He was also called into the Colin O’Brien’s Ireland U 17 squad in September for a friendly double header against Belgium at the Belgium Football Centre in Trubize.

Cooney started in the second of those two games and helped Ireland to a 1-0 win in a team that also contained rising stars Mason Melia (St Patrick’s Athletic) and Jaden Umeh (Cork City).

Harps boss Darren Murphy told finnharps.ie: “As a football club we’re delighted that Oisin has signed a two-year deal to stay at the Finn Park. He is another player that has come through the Academy and so massive credit has to go to the coaches Oisin has worked with in his career to date.

‘’It is brilliant to get Oisin signed on, it’s so important we as a club look after and reward our best prospects and Oisin is certainly one of them.

“He’s progressing well and is very well thought of within the group. Making his Senior and International debuts last year should give him great confidence going into preseason this year.”
