Past and present team-mates have paid tribute to James McClean after the Ireland legend announced his impending retirement from international football.

The Derryman, 34, will line out for the last time in a green shirt next month when Stephen Kenny’s side host New Zealand in a friendly at the Aviva Stadium.

McClean has been omitted from the initial squad to face Greece and Gibraltar later this month but may be called up as injury cover.

The Wrexhan wideman has set the date for an emotional farewell on Tuesday, November 21st, and his Ireland colleagues were the first to shower him with plaudits.

“Incredible career in the Irish jersey, special person & team mate an inspiration to everyone. Well done bud,” vice-captain John Egan wrote on Instagram.

Fellow Derryman Shane Duffy said: “A privilege to play with in the Irish jersey. Proud of you Jim what a career one of the greats. Well done on an amazing international career.”

Former captain and record goalscorer Robbie Keane beamed: “Congrats on a great international career pal it was a pleasure to play with you your passion was so clear to see.”

Both striker Troy Parrott and goalkeeper Caoimhín Kelleher dubbed McClean, 34, simply as a “legend,” while the most heartfelt tribute came from wife Erin McClean.

She wrote: “We are so proud of you and everything you’ve achieved and done in the Ireland jersey.

“What an incredible journey it’s been with the most amazing memories. Been a privilege watching it all alongside you.”
