In a quarter-final clash at the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023, Australia edged past France in an enthralling penalty shootout, prevailing 7-6 after a goalless draw in regular and extra time.

Courtney Vine emerged as the match-winner, converting the pivotal penalty to carry the Matildas into the tournament's semi-finals.

France, who dominated for significant stretches of the match, rued an early missed opportunity when Maelle Lakrar failed to convert a seemingly easy chance just 13 minutes into the game.

The narrative of near-misses continued, with Mary Fowler’s on-target effort thwarted by Elisa de Almeida's last-minute clearance.

Despite their challenges, the Matildas kept pushing forward. Star striker Sam Kerr, introduced in the second half, made an instant impact, creating a prime opportunity for Hayley Raso.

But French goalkeeper Pauline Peyraud-Magnin, in splendid form throughout the game, was again the savior for Les Bleues.

Extra time brought further drama. Australian defender Alanna Kennedy inadvertently turned the ball into her net, only for the goal to be quickly disallowed by referee Maria Carvajal, citing a foul in the buildup.

With both sides unable to break the deadlock, the fate of the match rested on the dreaded penalty shootout.

The spotlight was on the goalkeepers: Australia's Mackenzie Arnold showcased her mettle with several crucial saves, and France's substitute keeper Solene Durand mirrored her efforts with some spectacular stops.

But as the tension reached its zenith, Vicki Becho's shot hit the woodwork, paving the way for Vine to etch her name into Australian football history.

Following the match, Australia's coach, Tony Gustavsson, beamed with pride.

“The bravery and the heart this team showed is unbelievable,” he said. On the other side, a magnanimous Herve Renard congratulated Australia while expressing optimism for France's future.

Australia will now advance to face either England or Colombia in Sydney.
