Luke McNicholas departs Sligo Rovers on loan to join Wrexham

Sligo Rovers goalkeeper Luke McNicholas has departed the Bit O’ Red on an initial loan until January to join Wrexham.

McNicholas, 23, may then join the ambitious League Two side on a permanent deal in January if the club opt to sign him.

The former Ireland under-18 international and under-21 squad member leaves Sligo Rovers in seventh place in the Premier Division.

And the Mayo man has made 26 appearances for the Bit O’ Red this season as John Russell’s men struggled to stay in contention for a European place.

They are now looking nervously over their shoulder in regards to a potential play-off battle as McNicholas follows Max Mata out the door in recent days.

“I’m absolutely buzzing to be here and can’t wait to get started,” McNicholas said after joining Wrexham.

“The experience in the goalkeeping department at Wrexham is second to none.

“I’ve got so much to learn from all of them so I know I’m going to soak it all in.”

Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson added: “I’m delighted to sign Luke.

“He’s a good, young goalkeeper with real potential and we’re looking forward to working with him.”
