Wrexham sign James McClean from Wigan Athletic

Wrexham has signed veteran midfielder and Republic of Ireland international, James McClean, from Wigan Athletic for an undisclosed fee.

McClean, 34, who achieved his 100th international cap this summer, has penned a one-season contract with Wrexham, with the option of an extension.

However, fans will have to wait a while longer to see him in action as he is not available for the upcoming Saturday's match against MK Dons. He is scheduled to join the squad next week.

Speaking about his move to Wrexham, McClean expressed his enthusiasm, saying: “I’m absolutely delighted to sign for Wrexham. It’s a project that is very exciting and I’m looking forward to being a part of it. The Club has ambitions to go even further, and I’m a very ambitious person. I’m someone who is driven and I want to be a part of that journey.”

Born in Derry, McClean began his career with Institute and later spent three years with Derry City.

His introduction to English football came in 2011 when he joined Sunderland.

After two seasons in the top flight, he moved to Wigan in 2013 and spent two seasons with The Latics.

His career then took him to West Bromwich Albion and Stoke City before he returned to Wigan in 2021.

During his second stint with Wigan, McClean helped the club to earn a promotion from EFL League One in his first season, and he was a regular feature in the EFL Championship in the 2022/23 campaign.

The Irishman has amassed over 550 domestic career appearances, scored 69 goals, and netted 11 times in his 100 international appearances.

Reacting to the signing, Wrexham AFC manager Phil Parkinson said: “I’m really pleased with the signing of someone with the calibre of James. As I said in the summer, it’s about being patient and getting the players in who can be strong additions to our squad moving forward.”
