Longford Town’s slim play-off hopes were dealt a setback on Saturday night as they slumped to a 1-0 loss at home to Cobh Ramblers.

Stephen Henderson’s side are now six points off Wexford in fifth place and they are now 9th in the league table.

The Red and Black are also two points behind Finn Harps in 8th.

But Wilson Waweru’s headed winner has seen the Rams copper-fasten their spot in the play-offs.

Shane Keegan’s side moved six points clear of fourth-placed Athlone Town following their win.

While they started well, Cobh had to wait until the 27th minute to score, and it ended up being their winner as Longford failed to deal with a set-play.

Cian Browne’s long throw-in was flapped at by Longford Town’s stand-in goalkeeper Jack Harrington, with Waweru on hand to nod home into an empty net.

Despite dominating, Cobh almost coughed up a leveller when Cristian Magerusan was felled for a penalty.

However, former Ramblers striker Beineon O’Brien Whitmarsh fired the spot-kick wide of goal – and Longford were unable to level as their play-off hopes took a hit.
