DERRY CITY

FAI Cup holders Derry City know they can not take the defence of their cup for granted when they host Athlone Town in the first round of the competition on Sunday (kick-off is at 5pm).

The Candystripes won the decider last year against Shelbourne 4-0 at the Aviva Stadium.

But they have flattered to deceive in recent weeks in league action with a few points being dropped in their pursuit of league leaders Shamrock Rovers.

However, they have at least sealed their passage into the next round of the Europa Conference League thanks to a 1-0 aggregate win over HB Torshavn on Thursday night.

“We’ll definitely freshen it up a bit but there won’t be wholesale changes for Sunday,” Derry boss Ruaidhri Higgins said.

“Our cup run last year showed exactly what the FAI Cup means to this club and the whole city and we’re desperate to keep it going as long as we possibly can.

“With so many games at the minute we clearly have to manage demands on players, and while there will be a few changes, we’re in the fortunate position of being able to do that without affecting the quality of the team.

“We’ve obviously watched Athlone and they have some very good players, particularly going forward.

“They’re well in contention for a play-off place this season and we will prepare for them the way we do for every other team.”

ATHLONE TOWN

Play-off chasing Athlone Town know that they have it all to do if they are to dump holder Derry City out of the FAI Cup.

Dario Castelo’s side have enjoyed an impressive season in the First Division this term but this is a far greater test of their mettle.

But they have at least managed to add to their squad in recent days with forward Dylan Gavin returning to the club.

The striker returns after a spell at Charlton Athletic in the UK having previously played for the club at under-15 and under-17 level.

However, his arrival has come hot on the heels of Adam Lennon’s exit.

The former UCD winger has left the club alongside Gavin Gilmore and Charles Mutawe this summer.
