Goals from Josh Honohan and Tunde Owolabi gave Cork City the victory in Saturday’s FAI Cup first round game at Markets Field. It was a tight encounter against the Limerick side who provided stiff opposition for most of the game.

They must hope it provides a platform for an improvement in their league results.

It is an early exit for Treaty though. They created enough chances to have gone in front during a keenly contested first half before going behind just after the break. A late red card for Darren Nwankwo only added to their disappointment.

Tommy Barrett made three changes from their last game against Kerry after their encounter with Waterford was rained off. Conor Winn, Jordan Tallon, and Mark Walsh all came into the side in favour of Shane Hallahan, Andy Spain and Colin Conroy.

For the Leesiders, Ally Gilchrist and new signing Rokas Stanulevicius came in for Aaron Bolger and Ruairi Keating (who was absent for family reasons after the death of his father).

It was the away side who started the brighter of the two teams. Nwankwo did well to shield out Owolabi when he was found in a threatening position before Cian Bargary almost caught out Conor Winn with a dipping cross that he put out for a corner.

Honohan then was only able to meet the side netting when he met Barry Coffey’s corner from the left.

Treaty came back into the game and a Dean George cross caught out Jimmy Corcoran after it took a deflection off Cian Coleman. The City net-minder was able to recover in time.

Both sides then came close to taking the lead. Willie Armshaw embarked on a mazy run before letting fly with a shot that smacked off the woodwork. Coffey then had an effort cleared off the line through a combination of Conor Winn and a follow-up from Mark Walsh.

Armshaw then had another opportunity blocked just before the break.

It was a quiet start after the interval as both sides attempted to get back in the rhythm of the game.

It was Hohohan who struck for the lead. Coffey swung in another corner with the defender was able to evade his marker to head home.

The game was still in the balance as either could have scored next. Dean George spun on the edge of the area before shooting. It took a deflection off a defender and took most of the power out of it allowing Corcoran to claim it with ease. Coffey then shot just over from 20 yards.

City were dealt a blow as Stanulevicius went down with an injury and needed to be taken off.  He was replaced by Bolger.

The game was all but decided when City doubled their lead with fifteen minutes to go. Owolabi took advantage of space inside the box to fire past Winn.

The away side saw out the game for the remainder despite attempts by Treaty to get back into the game. It was all but decided when Nwankwu was sent off for a late red card for a second booking.

City walked off to the applause of the travelling fans after a tough week on and off the pitch. They must hope that this win will give them confidence ahead of their relegation battle. Treaty must now concentrate on their play-off ambitions for the rest of the season.

City take on Shelbourne at Turners Cross next Friday at 19:45 while Treaty travel to play Wexford at the same time.
