Southampton has unveiled its latest addition, defender Derrick Abu, in a permanent deal following his exit from Chelsea.

The 19-year-old right-back is joining Southampton after a nine-year tenure with the London club.

The young star has penned a two-year deal with the Saints. Abu is set to initially join Dave Horseman's Under-21s squad for the 2023/24 season.

Abu's football career has seen significant highlights in recent years. He was part of the Chelsea team that emerged victorious at the Premier League U16 International Tournament in 2019.

His skills on the field earned him a call-up to the England Under-17s team in 2020. He broke into the Under-21s side that secured the third position in the Premier League 2's top division last season.

Reflecting on his move to Southampton, Abu could barely contain his excitement. "I'm absolutely delighted to be here, I can't wait to get started," he said. "I've spoken to the players, managers and I'm so excited, I honestly can't wait."

He explained that the club's future vision was a key factor in his decision.

"It was mainly the project [that attracted me] and the long-term vision of where the club's going to be," he said.

After speaking with the directors about their vision for him at the club, he was instantly convinced. "[I spoke to] the directors and what they saw and how I could benefit this club, it definitely took me straight away."
