League Preview: Athlone Town -v- Cobh Ramblers

ATHLONE TOWN

Athlone Town host Cobh Ramblers at the Athlone Town Stadium on Friday night in a vital play-off clash (kick-off at 7.45pm).

The Co Westmeath side head into this weekend’s game off the back of a disappointing 2-0 loss at home to Treaty United last weekend.

Enda Curran and Willie Armshaw both scored for Tommy Barrett’s to dent Athlone’s play-off hopes this season.

But Athlone have overachieved this season and are exceeding their pre-season expectations by some distance.

And if they claim a win against the Rams, they will move up to third place in the table.

COBH RAMBLERS

Cobh Ramblers boss Shane Keegan insists his side must exorcise the demons of their defeat on their last visit to the Athlone Town Stadium against Athlone Town.

On that occasion, Ramblers succumbed to a 2-0 loss in the Midlands – but it was a game that still grates with Keegan.

And he said as much following Cobh’s shock 1-0 win over Waterford last weekend at St Colman’s Park.

“We went up to Athlone earlier this season and we were just awful,” Keegan said. “This is the scene of the result that we want to set right.

“They are a good side and I don’t think their position in the table is a falsehood in any shape or form.

“I would be very surprised if they are not in the play-offs at the end of the season. It is going to be a very big test.”

Referee: Gavin Colfer.
