Everton FC confirmed today that their long-serving captain, Irirsh International Seamus Coleman, has signed a new one-year contract to extend his playing career with the Blues into a 15th season.

The Irish right-back joined the club from Sligo Rovers in January 2009 for a bargain price of £60,000 and has since made 409 appearances, making him the 17th on the Toffees' all-time list.

Coleman, who currently holds the title of the longest-serving player in the Premier League, is just three games short of surpassing Tim Howard's record as Everton’s top appearance-maker in the competition.

The Republic of Ireland international, who earned his captaincy in 2019, has represented his country 68 times since his debut in 2011.

“Everyone knows how much Everton means to me which is why it is special to sign this new contract and continue to play for this great club," Coleman told evertonfc.com.

The seasoned footballer is in the midst of recovery from a knee ligament injury sustained in May.

Despite this, he spoke enthusiastically about his future with Everton, promising to contribute "on the pitch as much as possible."

Everton Chairman Bill Kenwright was elated with the captain's contract renewal.

"Seamus is an Evertonian, a leader – but even more importantly, he is a sincere and genuine man," said Kenwright.

"We all look to Seamus to set the best example. And he always does – on and off the pitch."

Everton Director of Football, Kevin Thelwell, acknowledged Coleman's significant role in the team, stating, "He is one of the most respected figures in football and a huge favourite with Evertonians for very good reason: he loves the Club, gives absolutely everything each time he puts on a royal blue shirt and is a model professional and leader."

Coleman is expected to return to Finch Farm next week to continue his recovery and start preparations for the upcoming Premier League campaign.
