Derry City have announced the signing of Dundee winger Paul McMullan on a free transfer after his contract expired with the Scottish side at the end of the 2022/23 season.

McMullan, who scored six goals and registered 11 assists in 35 appearances in the Scottish Championship, was pivotal in The Dee achieving promotion back to the Scottish Premiership the first time of asking.

The winger was named in the Scottish Championship team of the year as well as winning individual accolades such as being named Championship player of the month in November.

Despite the Scottish forward publicly stating he wanted to extend his stay at the club, at the end of the campaign he has decided to move on with Derry reaping the benefits of his decision.

The Candystripes sit in second place behind the champions Shamrock Rovers in the Premier Division, but after Rovers slipping up against rivals Bohemians and Derry winning on Friday night, the gap is just four points. Importantly, Derry travel to Tallaght on Monday night with an opportunity to cut the difference in points to just one.

They will hope the signing of the former Celtic youth player will add that extra spark to a Derry City that has struggled at times in front of goal.

The Red and White Army are also short in the attacking department with Ollie O’Neill’s loan spell at the club finished, Colm Whelan is once again ruled out again for the rest of the season after rupturing his ACL while the fitness of Paddy McEleney is a constant issue.

McMullan is not eligible for Monday night’s game against Shamrock Rovers but he will be for their Europa Conference League ties against HB Torshavn in July.
