In a significant development for women's football in the South East, it has been announced that Wexford Youths Women FC will begin playing under the Wexford FC banner starting from the 2024 season.

This change is expected to provide stronger support as the team ventures into a new era of professional football in the Women's Premier Division.

Wexford Youths Women, who were granted a license to compete in the inaugural Women’s National League for the 2011/12 season, have since secured a record four League titles and four FAI Cups. Now, they are set to continue this journey under the Wexford FC banner.

Alan Browne, Chairperson of Wexford Youths Women FC, shared the news on South East Radio’s Morning Mix, saying, "From the start of the 2024 season Wexford Youths Women will come under the banner of Wexford FC. The clubs will align under the one banner of Wexford FC under the one crest which is very exciting news.”

Browne also credited Tony Doyle, Wexford FC CEO, and the FAI for their support in this process, saying, “We’ve been going through a process with Tony Doyle and the FAI to put this together so I’m delighted to announce the news today. We are very excited to get down to business and see how we can build this partnership going forward.”

Mark Scanlon, League of Ireland Director, hailed the move as a significant development for women's football, noting that Wexford Youths have been at the forefront of this growth.

Scanlon said, “This move will strengthen further and solidify their place in women’s football and give an opportunity for all of Wexford to get behind both the men’s and women’s teams.”

Scanlon lauded the team’s efforts and wished them luck on their new journey, stating, “It’s been brilliant to see everybody working together on this for the last couple of months, the club has kept us informed in the FAI over what’s been happening every step of the way. I’m really excited for them and really excited for the players and I’d like to congratulate them all and wish everybody at Wexford FC the best of luck with the next steps with this project.”

John Godkin, Head of Football at Wexford FC, echoed these sentiments and hailed this development as a historic moment for Wexford football.

He said, “Great news and a historic moment for Wexford football, it’s a great amalgamation. We have been talking in the background for a number of months. There’s a lot of work that has gone on already so the foundations are in place and it’s another great news story for Wexford FC.”
