Former Mervue United schoolboy Conor Shaughnessy has joined Portsmouth from Burton Albion in League One.

Shaughnessy, 26, is a former Ireland under-21 international but has not made the grade at senior international level as of yet.

Moving to Reading at 16, Shaughnessy joined Leeds United in 2016 and subsequently enjoyed loan spells at Hearts, Mansfield Town and Burton.

He also made nine appearances for the Whites at Elland Road while involved with the first-team at Leeds United.

But after a two-year spell with Burton, Shaughnessy has joined Pompey as John Mousinho’s side bid to achieve promotion to the Championship next season.

“Conor is a very versatile player and has appeared in a number of positions for Burton over the past couple of years,” Mousinho said.

“He’s just as comfortable operating in the middle of the park than he is at the back, but we’ve brought him in because of his quality.

“Athletic and very comfortable on the ball, his challenge is to nail down a place in the side next season.”
