Josh Sheehan has signed a new two-year contract with Bolton Wanderers, the club announced.

This development ensures that Sheehan will stay with the Whites until June 2025, an extension agreed upon as his existing contract was due to end later this month.

The 28-year-old footballer transferred to Bolton Wanderers from Newport County in June 2021. Since joining, he has taken the field 54 times for the Whites, registering six goals to his name.

Sheehan's past season was marked by a strong comeback following a prolonged knee injury.

Upon returning to full fitness, he played a critical role in the latter part of the 2022/23 campaign, where he scored decisive winning goals against Port Vale and Shrewsbury Town.

The midfielder expressed his delight at the opportunity to continue his career with the Whites and contribute to Evatt’s squad.

"As soon as the club mentioned it, we got to work on agreeing a deal and getting it over the line, and I'm looking forward now to next season,” Sheehan said.

"I feel like I'm coming into my peak years – at a good age, experience, and the amount of games I’ve had. And I feel the way we play can get the best out of me and I'm hoping I show that in the next couple of years."

Last season, Sheehan's performances helped Bolton Wanderers finishing fifth in the table.

Although they lost to Barnsley in the play-off semi-finals, the former Swansea City player is confident that a full pre-season campaign will provide him with the foundation to support the team's future promotion efforts.

"When I first signed, the goal was always to get promoted and we are working towards that goal,” he added.

“We got close this year and next year that’s going to be our target and anything less we won’t be happy."
