Harrogate Town Football Club has announced the acquisition of full-back Liam Gibson on a free transfer.

The 26-year-old player, formerly a product of the Newcastle academy, has signed a two-year contract with the club.

Gibson has garnered experience in League One and League Two during his time with Accrington, Grimsby, and most recently, Morecambe.

Notably, his determination extends beyond the pitch, as he successfully overcame an 18-month battle with ulcerative colitis to continue his football career.

Following the completion of his contract, Morecambe's 2023/24 Players Player of the Year shared his enthusiasm for the new chapter:

“I’m buzzing to be here, as soon as I heard of the interest I was itching to come down and get signed, I can’t wait to get started in July."

He further elaborated on his attraction to Harrogate, "I played here a few times with Morecambe and it just felt like a really homely football club, I couldn’t get down here quick enough."

Gibson expressed his ambition to replicate his excellent form from the previous season at Morecambe, stating, "I want to take the form I had at Morecambe last season and bring it here to Harrogate and hopefully we can push on as a team to have a good season, I enjoyed my time there but I’m a Harrogate player now and I’m focused on doing as well as possible.”

Harrogate's Head of Player Recruitment, Lloyd Kerry, shared his high hopes for the new addition. "Liam has great experience at this level and knows what it takes to get out the league, last season he played 44 games in League One so he ticks a lot of boxes for us and we think he’ll be a great signing."

Describing Gibson as "reliable, consistent, strong physically and very calm on the ball," Kerry also noted that multiple teams had shown interest in the player, making his decision to join Harrogate all the more delightful.
