Ruaidhri Higgins hails 'very talented' Ollie O'Neill ahead of Derry City's season opener

Derry City boss Ruaidhri Higgins has heaped praise on his new signing Ollie O’Neill ahead of the Candystripes season opener against St Patrick’s Athletic.

O’Neill, 20, joins Derry on loan from Fulham on a loan deal until the summer.

The forward is also an Ireland Under-21 international and has scored for Jim Crawford’s side during their dramatic Under-21 European qualifier against Sweden at Tallaght Stadium.

And he becomes the latest of that Ireland Under-21 crop of talent to join the club.

Brian Maher, Colm Whelan and Adam O’Reilly all represented the Boys during that previous qualifying campaign.

And O’Neill has now joined the trio at the Ryan McBride Brandywell Stadium.

Higgins said: “It’s a fantastic signing for us.

“Ollie will enhance our attacking options and he’ll get supporters off their seats.”

“He’s been eager to get out and get some first team football and Fulham have kindly let him come to us, which we’re very grateful for.

“He’s very, very talented and what was very pleasing was he had done his research and knew a lot about us.

“He was a major influence in the move. He wanted to come here and wants to be a part of things here.”
