Galway Women’s FC opened up their 2022 National League campaign with a 3-0 victory over Cork City Women at Turner’s Cross.
From the whistle, the visitors commanded the tempo of the play. Nicole McNamara set the tone for the afternoon as she hoovered up everything at the back for Galway Women.
With their defence sound, the victors began to drift forward. They ended up hitting City twice in quick succession, with McNamara and Aoibheann Costello both scoring for Galway.
City’s response nearly saw the ball trickle in after Danielle Burke played a quick pass to Aoibhin Donnelly, who was just outside the box. The shot beat everyone inside the area and the ball ended up bobbing inches wide of the Shed End. Eva Mangan also went close to scoring for City, but her attempt sailed wide and into the stand.
A corner from City met Aoibheann Costello at the start of the second half, and the ball was nearly turned in. Leah Hayes Coen was alert to catch stop the spinning ball on the line.
Lynsey McKey did well to get into space for Galway, but before she could shoot, City converged and won back possession. They charged forward from this and a quick pass was put to the feet of Eva Mangan. Her attempt dropped straight into Hayes Cohen’s hands.
Any attempted comeback by City was quelled by Julie-Ann Russell, who knocked in Galway’s third goal from close range.
