St Patrick's Athletic have given a New Year's Day present to their fans with the news of the re-signing of Ronan Coughlan.

The Limerick native signs for a second season at Richmond Park after leaving Sligo Rovers following the 2019 campaign.

He began his career with Limerick before joining Yorkshire outfit Huddersfield Town along with fellow Treaty native Tadhg Ryan and the duo won underage silverware at the club before returning to Ireland ahead of the 2018 season.

He started that campaign with Bray Wanderers and found the net four times in the league before joining Cork City midway through the campaign and he scored four FAI Cup goals for the Leeside outfit as they reached the final and finished second in the league.

2019 saw Coughlan move west as he signed for Sligo Rovers and he rattled in ten goals, eight in the league and a brace of FAI Cup strikes before a shortened 2020 campaign which saw six league goals for the Bit O' Red, three of which were penalties, as well as one FAI Cup goal and success in the penalty shootout quarter final win over rivals Derry City.

His penalty prowess came to the fore once more in the FAI Cup in 2021 as he netted the opening shootout penalty for St Patrick's Athletic as they won the trophy for the first time since 2014. This capped the end of a season in the forward found the net seven times in the league and once in the FAI Cup.

In an interview with St Patrick's Athletic Twitter, Coughlan expressed his joy at re-signing for the Inchicore outfit, “I’m delighted to be back."

"We had a very successful season last year in the league & ended it by winning the cup on what was a brilliant day. It was a tough year for me personally, I started well but got quite a serious injury which hampered my performances a bit”

“My operation recently went well & I’m looking forward to 2022 & working with Tim, Jon & the staff & squad as we push for more silverware.”

For his part, new manager Tim Clancy spoke to the same source and enthused about the values of the forward, “Ronan is a technically gifted attacker & another excellent addition.

"He showed in the first-half of last season his ability to score goals before an injury hampered end to the year. His rehab went well, he’s raring to go & we’re looking forward to working with him!”
