Galway United emerged victorious on Friday night with a 4-1 win over UCD at Eamonn Deacy Park to go second in the First Division.

Having failed to score against Treaty United two weeks ago, thanks in large part to an excellent performance from goalkeeper Tadhg Ryan, the Tribesmen unleashed four goals against their promotion rivals with Wilson Waweru, Mikie Rowe, Shane Doherty and Padraic Cunningham all scoring on Friday.

Mikie Rowe spoke to extratime.com after the game and the midfielder was pleased to secure the result in front of a loud home crowd.

“UCD are a top side, and they could have easily been in a Cup semi-final last week after that excellent performance against Waterford so we’re over the moon to beat a really good side,” Rowe said.

“We played very well against Treaty, ended up drawing 0-0, Tadhg Ryan was man of the match on the night.

“Some nights the ‘keeper will be man of the match and you won’t score and other nights you’ll do well and score four. It was one of those nights tonight, we’ll enjoy it and focus on next week.”

It’s on to Cobh Ramblers this week for Galway United as they keep their eyes on the playoffs coming up in a few weeks, with a chance that they may face UCD again in their bid for promotion to the Premier Division.

“It's cliché but we have been taking it one game at a time, Cobh next week, we’ll look to do the same as we did tonight.

“We feel like if we execute the game plan and play as well as we can that we can beat anyone on our day, it’s all about next week and staying consistent.

“In the League against UCD it’s been excellent, but the playoffs are a complete different ball game, they are individual cup games essentially so it’s going to be a different kettle of fish but let’s hope we get a crowd like that tonight.

“We’re really looking forward to what comes, we’re taking it one game at a time and we’re not getting ahead of ourselves.”
