Sean Boyd: 'The reason I worked every day while I was injured was to come back and be involved in a football team again'

Heading into Saturday’s game against Longford Town, Finn Harps forward Sean Boyd had not scored a league goal in two years.

That two years has proven to be a journey of sorts for the former Shamrock Rovers forward who has had to overcome plenty of adversity.

At the end of the 2019 season, Boyd was on a PFAI Training Camp squad that played Rochdale. And it appeared that he was set to find a club.

But then, disaster struck. He was stretchered off with a serious long-term injury and was forced to wait to make a return to League of Ireland football.

And that he has with Finn Harps. After signing for a new club, he has now finally broken his league duck, scoring against the side who he scored last with, Longford Town.

“I knew when I came on, we weren’t going to be committing too many forward,” Boyd told extratime.com after the game.

“Barry McNamee just put it in the box, and I made a little movement, and it came to my head.

“I know Lee is a good shot stopper, it’s a lucky one but I’ll take it every day of the week.

“The reason I worked every day while I was injured was to come back and be involved in a football team again.

“That’s what it was all about to be honest and I’m glad to be part of a really good group of lads in the dressing room. I’m happy enough just to be involved.”

Saturday’s win for Harps was their second win on the spin, and it eases their automatic relegation worries as they raced 14 points clear of Longford in the process.

And Boyd was pleased that he could play a big role in that.

“We have a job to do, and we want to get up as high in the table as possible,” he added.

“Longford are below us in the table and its up to us to keep the gap or extend it.

“It’s a massive three points and gives us the confidence to maybe push on and have a look above us and see what’s there.”
