Adrian Carberry: 'We're trying to add players - but it is a tough window'

Athlone Town boss Adrian Carberry admits that he is looking to continue bolstering his ranks during this month’s transfer window.

Carberry oversaw a 1-0 win over Cabinteely on Friday night, with Derek Daly’s strike the difference between the teams.

Their win came following the late withdrawal of Shane Barnes with a hand injury. Barnes joins Kilian Cantwell and Scott Delaney on the treatment table at Lissywoolen.

And with his squad stretched with a number of injuries and departures, Carberry confirmed that he is looking to add to his squad before the window slams shut at the end of the month.

“We’re trying to add players in the window,” he told extratime.com. “But it’s a tough window.

“Every team is finding that out. We’re talking to a couple of players just to make us a little bit stronger. Hopefully we’ll have one or two nailed down shortly.”

Carberry, however, has been aided in recent weeks with the arrival of former Wexford boss Brian O’Sullivan to his backroom team at the club.

“Graham Kane has given us a great help early on this season, but he has had to step away for a small bit, so Brian [O’Sullivan] has come in.

“He’s a good coach, as well as manager, so we’re using his experience in the league over the last two years. It’s working already and he has been very good with us.”

And after a difficult few weeks, the former Athlone and Galway player is hoping that the Co. Westmeath side can push on and build on Friday’s win over Cabo.

“It’s a great win after a hard couple of weeks,” he explained. “Players might have been questioning themselves a small I thought.

“But we were a good team at the start, and I think we’re still a good team, and we showed that.

“It’s a tough place to come and play. We managed the game very well, saw it out and defended well so we’re delighted with that.

He added: “I thought right from the start we were at it and got in behind them straight away. It was like watching back the first few games of the season.

“We were a good team then and we’re still a good team. A few people doubted us, but we knew it would turn around again.”
