Shels boss Ian Morris praises his side as the Reds end their Cabinteely hoodoo

Shelbourne boss Ian Morris praised his ‘excellent’ side as they finally brought an end to their wretched winless run against Cabinteely on Friday evening.

The Reds failed to win in their past six league outings against Cabo – with their last win versus the South Dubliners coming in October 2017 prior to Friday night.

“I’m really pleased,” Morris told extratime.com after the game. “It was a really professional performance from us. Cabinteely are a tough team, and anyone who comes here gets a good game and I thought the boys performed well.

“We did the basics well and created a lot of chances. The boys at the top end of the pitch were a real handful and caused a number of problems to their defence.

“Defensively we were really good. The goal we conceded was an individual error but the boys were good tonight.”

As mentioned, the Cabo hoodoo for Shels stretched back to six games – but Morris insists that he, nor his side, made much of that record.

“No it didn’t,” he stressed. “You can let things become bigger than you and you have to keep plugging away.

“It’s another game of football and the squads change every year so you can’t hang onto things like that.

“We just wanted to make sure the boys were switched on and approach the game well – they were excellent.”

The result sees Shels move up to second position, and are just two points behind Treaty United who are top of the pile.

“Things are going OK,” he added. “It’s only the start of the season, we’re only a handful of games in so we just have to make sure our performance levels are good.

“We need to keep building and pushing. We need to make sure that we’re continuing that going forward.

“They’re on a very good run and they beat Cork. The teams are performing around us, but we just have to keep looking after ourselves.

“It’s too early to be talking about anything other than yourself.”

The Reds manager also singled out Shane Farrell who impressed, winning a penalty and scoring in the first-half.

“He was really good,” Morris finished.

“He’s quick, he can move, finish and create chances so it’s about him maintaining that consistency level.”
