Cronin praises UCD's quality

Longford Town manager Gareth Cronin praised UCD as the Students came from behind to defeat his side 2-1 at the UCD Bowl on Friday night.

Cronin admitted to setting his side out to play a defensive game: "I'll be honest with you: we set our stall out to be defensive. We got a lot of people behind the ball. We worked very, very hard."

Having only taken one point from a possible thirty in their games against the promotion chasing sides this year, including a 4-0 defeat to Sporting Fingal last week, Cronin was planning to keep the score down: "We haven't given the big four a decent game really all year. I didn't want to get beaten three or four nil here tonight."

Although it seemed to be paying off, Longford succumbed to two late goals, something which Cronin believes says an awful lot about the quality of the UCD side Longford were up against: "In the 80th minute I thought we might have a chance of winning the game or getting a draw. Unfortunately, it wasn't meant to be but that's the side of a good side like UCD. They kept plugging away and plugging away and they turned it around."
