Waterford clinch signing of midfielder Eric Molloy

Premier Division Waterford have confirmed the signing of midfielder Eric Molloy ahead of tomorrow evening’s clash against Sligo Rovers.

Waterford lost their opening league game of the season last week away to Drogheda United.

Molloy is formerly of Wexford Youths and most recently left Polish second division side Stomil Olsztyn after a one-year spell at the club.

Stomil lay in ninth position in the Polish second tier, just three points off the playoff positions when Molloy left at the time.

The Carlow native is a former Republic of Ireland under-18 international who played with Slaney Rovers, FC Carlow and Arklow Town before signing for Shane Keegan at Wexford Youths in February 2012.

In 2015 Eric scored three times in 21 league appearances as the Wexford Youths won the First Division title.

The following season he bagged two Premier Division goals from 23 league appearances, but Wexford were relegated back to the First Division following play-off defeat to Drogheda United.

At the end of 2016 Eric left Ireland to live in New Zealand where he played for Southern United.

After one season in Otago, Molloy made the switch to New Zealand Premiership champions Team Wellington for the 2017-18 season.

The 27-year-old played against Chelsea twice in 2019 for both Bohemians and St Patrick’s Athletic, scoring against Frank Lampard’s side for the Gypsies at Dalymount Park.

The Blues have also confirmed the re-signing of goalkeeper Paul Martin this evening.
