Athlone Town snap up Shane Barnes and Stephen Meaney for 2021

First Division Athlone Town have confirmed the double capture of both Shane Barnes and Stephen Meaney for the 2021 season.

Barnes joins Adrian Carberry’s side after a recent stint at Cabinteely, while Meaney links up with the Co. Westmeath side following a prior stint at Drogheda United.

23-year-old Barnes was also formerly of Bray Wanderers’ under-19s before joining Wexford during the 2018 season.

In 2019 he joined Cabinteely, and after struggling to make an impact during his first year of senior football at Stradbrook, he starred in 2020.

He scored five league goals for Cabo during a impressive first-half of the season at Stradbrook, but both he and his teammates would ultimately miss out on the First Division play-offs.

Also linking up with Athlone is ex-Drogheda winger Stephen Meaney. Meaney left the Boynesiders just before the end of the 2020 season.

While at Drogheda, Meaney scored 15 goals for the club in just under 50 appearances.
