Joe Casey set to step down as Shelbourne chairman

Joe Casey has confirmed that he is to step down as chairman of Premier Division side Shelbourne.

Casey has been the chairman of Shels for the past 14 years. He previously served as Financial Director of the club before also taking on the role as chairman.

He departs his role as chair of the club with the club back in the top-flight of Irish football after securing promotion back to the top-flight after a six-year absence.

However, he will remain on the club’s Board of Management despite vacating his role as both Financial Director and Chairman.

His statement read: “I have been Financial Director of the Club for the last 22 years and honoured to be Chairman for 14 of these and, with most of you, have shared some great highs and some terrible lows but I would like it to be known that I intend on stepping down from both of these roles at the end of this current season/financial year (November).”

After reaching a level of stability at the club, Casey added that he feels it is the ‘right time’ to pass the responsibility into new hands.

“As we have now reached a strong level of stability, I feel it’s the right time to take this course of action and pass the responsibilities over to new people.

“Andrew (Doyle) is putting together a lot of new blood brimming with enthusiasm and raring to go and I have no doubt that I pass over the keys of this great club to very safe hands.

“Shelbourne FC is bigger than any one of us and will remain an institution long after myself and all the rest of us have moved on.”
