Shamrock Rovers' Jack Byrne included in matchday squad for Slovakia play-off

Shamrock Rovers’ Jack Byrne has been named in the 23-man matchday squad for the Republic of Ireland’s crucial Euro 2020 play-off semi-final in Slovakia tonight.

The former Manchester City trainee is guaranteed at least a spot among the 12 substitutes as Stephen Kenny’s side look to keep their qualification dreams alive.

24-year-old Byrne has been in fine form for the Hoops recently and held his own against a star-studded AC Milan side in the Europa League qualifiers.

Recent weeks have seen Kenny scout the playmaker regularly, and he watched him score three goals in successive 4-0 wins over Dundalk and Sligo Rovers.

Byrne featured twice under former boss Mick McCarthy, grabbing an assist on his debut at home to Bulgaria before featuring in another win over New Zealand.

He was omitted from Kenny's squad for the UEFA Nations League games with Bulgaria and Finland as he struggled with a back injury but won his place back this time around.

Fellow midfielder Josh Cullen and former Cork City defender Kevin Long are the unfortunate duo from the travelling party to miss out.

Both players were late additions to the squad, new Anderlecht signing Cullen replacing the injured Harry Arter and Long called up when Darragh Lenihan was forced to pull out.
