Watch: Dundalk loanee Taner Dogan lobs keeper from 50 yards as Athlone Town stun leaders Drogheda United

Athlone Town stunned league leaders Drogheda United with a 2-0 win at United Park on Friday night, sealing it with an equally breath-taking goal from Taner Dogan.

The Dundalk loanee channeled David Beckham on Neil Sullivan in 1996, or Conan Byrne on Shane Supple years later, as he lobbed Drogheda goalkeeper David Odumosu from all of 50 yards.

American playmaker Dogan had scored just once for the midlanders since arrived on loan from the champions ahead of the restart, against Galway United in early August.

If your first goal is always special, then this second will live long in the memory for very different reasons – and Odumosu is unlikely to forget anytime soon either.

The St Louis native and Harvard graduate had already won the penalty that led to Ronan Manning’s 70th minute opener when he saw the opportunity arise.

Dogan spotted Odumosu off his line and chipped the keeper from just inside the home side’s half, and the keeper could do nothing except try, unsuccessfully, to scoop it out before it hit the net.
