Linfield have been crowned 2019/2020 NIFL Champions earlier today after finishing four points ahead of second placed Coleraine.

The news follows the announcement this week that the league was being curtailed with immediate effect and would not be completed.

The decision was taken by the League body after countless meetings with the clubs had seen conflicting views emerged. After consultation with Uefa, the decision was then taken to declare the season over and instead use a mathematical model to determine the final League standings as well as any relegation/promotion issues.

In a statement issued this evening the NIFL board said: “This has not been a straightforward situation for the league in unprecedented circumstances. Whilst recognising that not all clubs will be happy with the final standings, the NIFL Board has sought to take all reasonable and proportionate steps to ensure the fairest and most appropriate outcome is reached which will allow all stakeholders to start planning for the resumption of football, when safe and appropriate to do so.
