First Division basement battlers Wexford FC have unveiled the signing of former UCD and Shelbourne midfielder Cian Kavanagh.

Kavanagh joins the Slaneysiders after spending the 2019 campaign at Drogheda United, where he struggled to make a real stamp on Tim Clancy’s squad.

With only 15 appearances to his name with the Boynesiders last term, Kavanagh is keen to get regular game time at Ferrycarrig Park in 2020.

“I really enjoyed my time at Drogheda, they were very good to me, but I wasn't guaranteed to play every week so for the last two or three seasons,” the 23-year-old told Wexford’s media team.

“I felt like I deserved to play a bit more but I hadn't really got that so when Brian (O'Sullivan, Wexford FC Manager) rang me, it's not that he said I'll be playing every game, but he said if you come down and do well you'll have a great chance of playing weekly.

“I just need that. I sat down with my Dad and said I just need to get a season of regular games because I haven't had that this past few years.”

The former Shamrock Rovers B youngster added; “If you're not playing every week, say coming on for ten minutes or you might start a cup game, then you mightn't play for three weeks, you're not showing your best potential.

“I had a really good chat with Brian, and he's told me the lads that he wants to try get in. He's ambitious and wants us to be right up there. I've always enjoyed playing at Ferrycarrig, the clubhouse, the pitch.

“After every game lads are invited in after to get some food, no other clubs really do that for away teams so there's a really welcoming friendly atmosphere about the club and it's another one of the reasons why I signed.”
